Coaching for Multilingual Student Excellence: Strategies for Vocabulary, Reading, and Writing Across Disciplines

Presented by Karen Johannesen Brock and Margarita Espino Calderón

What should the teacher and I prioritize in multilingual learning (ML) classrooms? What should I observe during vocabulary, reading, and writing instruction? Is there a tool available for tracking student engagement? How do we ensure ML students rapidly gain language skills in the classroom?

This webinar will answer these questions based on empirical testing of coaching programs implemented in ESL/ELD, dual language, K–5 general education—and 6th-grade to 12th-grade math, science, social studies, and language arts classrooms in middle and high schools. We encourage coaches, teachers, and school leadership to attend this webinar together so you can launch your program immediately!

This session will share the process and content for planning and enacting a powerful coaching program by using:

  • The research, evidence, and rationale for instituting the coaching of language and literacy in classrooms with MLs
  • The specific coaching strategies to assist MLs and non-MLs in achieving excellence in vocabulary, discourse, reading comprehension, and writing across all subject areas and grade levels
  • Checklists and observation tools to collect data, give feedback, and plan goals with teachers of MLs
