The Metacognitive Preschooler

Presented by Richard K. Cohen, Katie Upshaw, Michele A. Herold, and Kelsee G. Young

This webinar will walk preschool educators and early childhood leaders through a practical metacognitive strategy called structured SELf-questioning that enables all students (preK–12) to take control of their emotions, thinking, and learning.

The webinar will focus on preschool applications throughout the day and curricula. It will also provide an overview of the strategy's brain, research, and evidence base while also providing a practical how-to session of the content from The Metacognitive Preschooler, which won a Silver Medal for Best Indie Book in Education (2025 IPPY Awards).

Participants will learn how the metacognitive strategy of structured SELf-questioning can be easily used to:

  • Create neural pathways and circuitry to promote executive functioning of all students no matter how neurodiverse
  • Embed SEL and executive functioning into any already existing daily morning meeting time to promote emotional intelligence and improve self-regulation
  • Develop all students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills across academic content areas by applying the strategy to already existing preschool curricular programs
